Grow Your Own

March 31st, 2008

washing I am trying to grow my own, but am not very successful. You might remember that I debated this, and even reported some initial progress, some while ago already.

Well, what can I say? The initial progress report back in November 2005 was a little premature. While the shots develop little roots, it never really catches on when being transferred to moist soil.

I have recently found another case of left-over and sprouting Ginger in my larder (hey! what did you think I was trying to grow?). Same method: place in shallow water, keep moist, and watch sprouts and roots slowly growing over two or three weeks.

I have now noticed that mould is settling in just above the water line, and consider this another failed experiment.

Would anyone know where I am going wrong?

Would the Ginger want to be submerged rather than sitting in a shallow puddle?

Is my kitchen window sill to chilly or too draughty?

Is supermarket Ginger gamma-rayed or otherwise made impotent?
